Hanok Stay Story
Stay Suncheon Garden
A Historic Space — The Story of Stay Suncheon Hanok
Stay Suncheon Hanok began as a traditional Korean home built in 1895, originally used as a private residence.
Having endured more than 130 years, this space is more than just a place to stay—it is a living home where the traces of everyday life and Korea’s traditional residential culture still remain.
When hanok houses were built in the past, important moments such as the beginning and completion of construction were carefully recorded.
At Stay Suncheon, the ridge beam inscription (Sangnyangmun) is still clearly preserved on the roof, quietly telling the story of that time.
Beneath the names of the dragon and the turtle,
the inscription records the exact date and time the house was born—a timeless message passed down through generations.

A Record of Time Preserved on the Roof
According to the ridge beam inscription (Sangnyangmun), this hanok was completed in the summer of 1895 through the following carefully recorded steps.
On July 24 (afternoon), the construction began with site preparation, marking the official beginning of the house.
On July 30, the wooden pillars were raised, forming the structural framework of the home.
On August 2 (morning), the pillars were carefully aligned and secured, bringing balance and stability to the structure.
Finally, on August 4 (afternoon), the main roof beam was lifted, completing the hanok.
This was not a house built in a single day or a single month, but a home created through time, care, and craftsmanship—its story preserved for generations to come.
The Dragon and the Turtle — Guardians of the Home
Carved at the top and bottom of the ridge beam inscription, the dragon and the turtle symbolize protection from fire and disaster.
More than a century ago, this house was built not only as a home, but as a space filled with prayers for safety and lasting life.
